How to Apply to the Utah Career Center Apprentice Program
Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Utah Career Center’s Apprenticeship Programs. Our apprentices earn while they learn through classroom instruction and on-the-job training under experienced journeymen. Our school operates in collaboration with the Utah Mechanical Contractors Association (UMCA) and the UA Local 140 labor union.
Programs Offered
- Plumbing, Pipefitting & Welding (PPW). This is a five-year, combined trade program — apprentices are trained and certified in all three areas.
- HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration). This is a five-year program focused on the installation, maintenance, and service of mechanical systems.
Both programs include daytime courses offered two semesters per year for four years and full-time, on-the-job training. The daytime courses meet Monday through Friday from approximately 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Basic Applicant Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must upload all required documents, including proof of age.
- Must pass 10-panel drug test with Concentra.
Only complete applications will be reviewed.
Important Application Information
If you have already submitted an application, please do not submit a second application.
This includes online applications as well as paper applications picked up at the Utah Career Center and submitted in person. Submitting multiple applications creates duplicate records and may delay processing.
If you applied previously and your application has expired, you are not required to complete a new application. You may request to have your application reactivated for the next round of interviews.
If you would like to verify whether you have a current application on file or request reactivation of a previous application, please contact:

First Step
The Utah Career Center invites you to apply for the Plumbing, Pipefitting, Welding (PPW) program and/or the HVAC Technician program. These are two distinct programs; you can apply for PPW, for HVAC or both programs.
We use an online application process. The link below will take you to an online application external to the UCC website. Please review the application and save your work throughout the process so you don’t lose information.
Once you have completed the online application, including uploading documents or external files, you submit the application to the Utah Career Center. Additional information will be presented to you once the completed application has been submitted.

Next Steps
After you submit the online application and internal processing (approximately 24 hours) you will receive an email with the following information:
- Concentra Drug Test Authorization Form. You will need to take the form, either printed or saved in an electronic format, to the Concentra location of your choice listed on the test authorization form. You need to pay the testing fee and take the 10-panel drug test.
Once your application is submitted and your negative drug test has been received from Concentra, you will receive email notifications from the Utah Career Center with details about:
- Group assessment testing.
- Orientation sessions.
- Interview scheduling.
